Landscapes
the landscape as an abstract line
After all, the lines we envision separating one “thing” from another are not as natural as they may seem despite our tendency to break up the world into sharply delineated islands of meaning. In reality things are rarely ever “cut off with an axe”. Indeed, nature usually “refuses to conform to our craving for clear lines of demarcation: she loves twilight zone” Although we may carve in our minds seemingly distinct neighborhoods, countries and continents out of space, in the real world there are no natural divides separating New York’s China town from little Italy, Morocco from Algeria or even Europe form Asia. Nor are forests, mountains, or deserts sharply delineated in nature. Even the so-called coastlines that separate land from sea are not real lines.
