What is the difference between a stone and an abstract shape?

When I draw stones, I start with an abstract shape—a silhouette that could represent anything. As I gradually fill in this shape with various textures, lines, and materials, it begins to take form. The result can be a stone, or simply an abstract creation. In daily life, stones are everywhere, serving as the foundations of our world. They are the building blocks of the city, the pathways we walk on, and the houses that keep us safe. Stones come in countless shapes and sizes, and this lack of strict definition reassures me.

I love drawing stones because it brings me closer to them. By studying the unique shapes that erosion imparts to stones—ranging from newly cracked, sharp edges to those smoothed completely by river currents—I develop a greater appreciation for them. I am also drawn to the muted earthy tones and vivid colors of the stones. Through drawing I aim to improve my ability to observe and replicate their structures I enjoy experimenting with various materials and techniques, such as oil pastels, monotype, pencils, and chalk, to capture the essence of stones in different ways.
