Unified Stones

Stones feel cold (stone-cold)

Hard with sharp edges (as hard as stone)

Not easily broken or bend

A material made by nature way before any of us were alive

Nonetheless all impregnated with the earth’s movement

Witnesses to the passage of billions of years

A small collection of rocks lying in my hand

Taken home (mine not theirs)

For just a fleeting moment in their long existence, they lie in my palm.

Gathered by my hands

Brought together, brought closer

Their edges merging, as if melted into one

By me, acting as the hand of mother earth

Whenever I go on a hike, the most intriguing rocks catch my eye, compelling me to bring them home. After a close inspection I decide whether there is still space in my bag for this rock to join me on my return. In this first part of the project, I combine the stones found in different places together into one stone. The ultimate stone - the stone that only I could create because I gathered these individual pieces and brought them together as a family. This is my first attempt to be the mother of my own stones.
