Huilie Huilie
aka Whiny Whiny

Whiny Whiny” is a loose translation of the Dutch title “Huilie Huilie.” This phrase carries both a sweet and ironic undertone when referring to someone who is crying. This project was created in collaboration with fellow illustrator, Sonja Schravesande, and together we explored the taboo about crying.

The first step in our visual research was creating a zine. We chose for a lapparello, featuring a stream of tears filled with illustrations made by both of us. The second step involved making a conversation piece, to talk with strangers about the taboo. Our goal was to encourage people to discuss crying and to create spaces for sharing their stories, whether lighthearted or heavy. People we encountered on the street shared their stories through the hand puppets we made. Through these puppets, we performed a little theater piece and concluded by thanking them and offering stickers as a reminder of the experience. It was a really wholesome experience and a very interesting way of opening up when talking about hard topics.
